Emergency Medical Services Technology Certificate of Specialization
The Emergency Medical Services Technology Certificate of Specialization is designed to prepare the student to become a competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Students will receive the technical knowledge and necessary skills to enter a career in emergency medical services. The EMT curriculum places emphasis on the critical thinking components needed to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) test. The EMT courses along with the Health Science courses are instrumental in entering a career as an Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Room Technician, Firefighter, and many other medical careers.
A grade of "C" or better is required in each course. Completed courses will appear on student’s transcripts. However, the Certificate of Specialization will only appear on documents issued directly by the Emergency Medical Services Technician department. The Emergency Medical Services Technology Certificate of Specialization will not be noted on the transcript.
- Assess, manage, and treat patients in a prehospital setting to include both medical and trauma patients.
- Identify human body systems as they relate to the patient assessment performed by the EMT-B.
- Manage respiratory disorders and demonstrate skills related to oxygen and drug therapy.
- Communicate with health care professionals utilizing basic medical terminology and prepare a medical report.
