Overview

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Program provides specialized support services and instruction that allow students with educational or functional limitations to equitably benefit from the college experience and meet their academic goals at San José City College. Services include counseling (academic, personal and vocational), specialized classes, tutoring, assistive technology, alternate media, sign language interpreting, and captioning.

Counseling Services

SAS offers specialized counseling and guidance for students with educational limitations which is often essential to their academic and vocational success. Services include an initial intake interview, registration assistance, authorization of accommodations based on verified limitations, and academic follow-up in each semester.

Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Services

Specialized counseling services and tutoring are available for students with hearing loss. In addition, accommodations include, but are not limited to, interpreters, captioners, and assistive listening devices for classroom instruction.

Diagnostic Learning Services

For students with learning differences, SAS offers excellent assessment services to determine learning style, strengths and weaknesses. Small group reading and math classes, tutoring, academic support for mainstream classes, and academic accommodations are available for students with verified learning differences. 

High Tech Computer Unit (HTCU) and Alternate Media

SAS offers computer-aided instruction with special equipment for students who are unable to use a computer in the traditional manner. SJCC offers a fully-equipped High Tech Computer Unit where assistance in learning to use specialized equipment, as well as one-on-one tutoring, are available for students with educational and functional limitations. The alternate media specialist provides students with accommodations such as books on tape, e-Text, or material scanned for WYNN, JAWS, and Braille.

Adapted Physical Education

A variety of adapted physical education classes are offered at SJCC for individuals with functional limitations to promote fitness, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and independence. The program offers for credit and non-credit weight training, fitness for life, and physical conditioning classes.

Educational Assistance Courses

Educational assistance classes address the educational limitations of students with disabilities and assist them in acquiring the skills necessary in completing their academic goals. SJCC offers basic computer and adaptive computer skills courses as well as developmental reading, writing and math courses specifically designed for SAS students. 

Student Rights

Students have the following rights under Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, as revised (29 U.S.C. 794), The American Disabilities Act 28 CFR 35.102-35.104, CA Assembly Bill 803 Government Code Section 11135 et. Seq., and Title V, section 56008 of CA Education Code.

• Voluntary participation in the services provided by SAS.
• Receive reasonable academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, services and/or instruction to access college classes, programs, activities, services, and facilities to facilitate learning without being discriminated against.
• Confidentiality and protected disclosure of all records maintained by SAS personnel.
• Modification in class or college policies unless the modification fundamentally alters the nature of services, activities, or course standards. 

The ADA coordinator is also available to answer questions about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Student Responsibilities

• Provide SAS with the information, documentation and/or forms deemed necessary by SAS to verify limitations;
• Comply with the student code of conduct adopted by the College;
• Be responsible in their use of SAS services and the academic accommodations provided;
• Adhere to written service provision policies adopted by SAS.

Determining Need

Students who need academic accommodations must meet with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) personnel to complete an application form, determine educational limitations, and complete an academic accommodation plan.
