This GE pattern may be used for General Education Certification for the University of California (UC) or the California State University (CSU).  For a course to meet an IGETC requirement, the course must be on the IGETC pattern during the academic year it was completed.

  1. High School Level Courses: Two years or coursework equivalent to the second level of high school instruction in a language other than English (LOTE). The two years must be in the same language. LOTE requires a grade of "C-" or better in the second semester of the second year.
  2. External Exams: Appropriate scores on the SAT II, AP, IBHL, GCE “O” or “A” level exams. See a counselor for appropriate scores.
  3. Complete two years of formal schooling at the sixth-grade level or higher at an institution where the language of instruction is not English.
  4. Have competency verified by a faculty member associated with a California Community College. Such verification requires that the college provide a document on letterhead asserting that the student has mastered proficiency in the language equivalent to two years/second level of high school instruction.

AREA 7: Ethnic Studies (IGETC Area Effective Fall 2023*)

Minimum 3 units - one course | Students who began attending SJCC prior to Fall 2023 and have maintained continuous enrollment (per catalog rights policy) and are using a previous IGETC pattern are not required to satisfy this new Area 7. Please consult with an academic counselor for more information.

*AREA 7: Ethnic Studies - This GE Area was effective starting Fall 2023.  New students and students who are returning who do not have Catalog Rights (please refer to the Catalog Rights policy within this catalog) are required to follow this updated GE pattern which contains Area 7.  Students who have been continuously enrolled and have Catalog Rights to previous Academic Years, may choose which catalog year they use for the purpose of degree and certificate conferment.  Consult with an academic counselor for more information and to ensure appropriate educational planning.
