AB 928 - Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act
What is AB 928?
AB 928 is a California law aimed at simplifying the transfer process for students moving from California Community Colleges (CCC) to California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campuses. It establishes a single general education pattern, known as Cal-GETC (California General Education Transfer Curriculum), which replaces the IGETC and CSU GE Breadth patterns beginning with the 2025-26 academic year.
Who may use Cal-GETC?
Completing the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) allows students to transfer from a CCC to a CSU or UC campus without needing to complete additional lower-division general education courses to meet campus requirements.
For most students, completing Cal-GETC before transferring is recommended, as it may provide more flexibility in class selection at the university and support timely progress toward degree completion. All CSU campuses and most UC campuses and programs accept certified Cal-GETC completion as meeting lower-division general education requirements.
However, some individual colleges or majors within UC campuses may not accept or recommend Cal-GETC for fulfilling all general education requirements. For details, refer to the UC Admissions website under “general education” for a list of colleges and majors with specific requirements.
Why is this Important?
AB 928 reduces barriers to transfer, saving students time and money while helping them achieve their academic goals more efficiently. If you have questions about AB 928 or how Cal-GETC impacts your educational plan, consult with a counselor for personalized guidance.
