Associate Degree Graduation Requirements

Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) - Graduation Requirements

The Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) or the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) is conferred upon students who complete a minimum of 60 CSU transferable semester units with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or better and complete the following:

  • The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) requirements or the California State University General Education-Breadth requirements (CSU GE) as stated for each specific ADT;
  • A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis (see specific ADT for precise courses and units);
  • At least 12 semester units in residence at SJCC;
  • Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) also require that students must earn a grade of "C" or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.  A "P" (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a "Pass/No Pass" basis;
  • While a minimum of 2.0 is required for admission to a California State University (CSU), some majors may require a higher GPA.  Please consult with a counselor for more information.

Please Note: No more than 60 CSU transferable semester units are required for this degree and no additional requirements will be imposed by San José City College.

Associate in Arts Degree (AA) - Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the Associate in Arts degree at San José City College, students must complete the following:

  • The AA General Education pattern with a minimum of 39 semester units;
  • All required major courses with a grade of "C" or better in each course; A "P" (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a "Pass/No Pass" basis;
  • A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis (see specific AA degree for precise courses and units);
  • A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0;
  • A minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units;
  • SJCC graduation requirements which include: completion of the American History, Constitutions, and American Ideals (US-1, US-2, and US-3 as defined by the CSU system), a Cultural Pluralism/Ethnic Studies course, and a Physical Activity course that is approved for Area E on the AA GE Pattern;
  • Competency in mathematics, reading and writing with a grade of "C" or better in each competency course;
  • At least 12 semester units in residence at SJCC.

Associate in Science Degree (AS) - Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the Associate in Science degree at San José City College, students must complete the following:

  • The AS General Education pattern with a minimum of 24 semester units;
  • All required major courses with a grade of "C" or better in each course; A "P" (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a "Pass/No Pass" basis;
  • A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis (see specific AS degree for precise courses and units);
  • A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0;
  • A minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units;
  • SJCC graduation requirements which include: completion of the American History, Constitutions, and American Ideals (US-1, US-2, and US-3 as defined by the CSU system), a Cultural Pluralism/Ethnic Studies course, and a Physical Activity course that is approved for Area E on the AS GE Pattern;
  • At least 12 semester units in residence at SJCC
  • Competency in mathematics, reading and writing with a grade of "C" or better in each competency course;
    •Reading and Writing - ENGL 001A or equivalent
    •Math Competency may be met by completion of one of the following (with official documentation):
    • Completion of MATH 013 (Intermediate Algebra), MATH 013A+013B (Intermediate Algebra), MATH014 (Geometry), or the equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university with a grade of "C" or better
    • Completion of any higher level mathematics course with a prerequisite of Intermediate Algebra or the equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university with a grade of "C" or better
    • Completion of two semesters of high school Algebra II with a grade of "C" or better on high school transcripts in each semester or the equivalent
    • A score of 3 or higher on one of the following Advanced Placement (AP) exams: Statistics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Calculus BC/AB Subscore, or Computer Science Principles (if taken Fall 2019 and later)
    • A score of 4 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam in Mathematics HL
    • A passing College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam score that meets CSU GE Area B4 as stated within this catalog
    • A proficiency score on the SAT Math Test or the ACT Math Test, currently meeting scores of SAT 520 and above and ACT 24 and above or the equivalent from previous SAT/ACT test scoring
    • Demonstration of mathematics competency from previously offered California Community College assessment placement results
    • *Students with disabilities who have severe functional limitations related to a competency area, may be eligible for a course substitution or waiver (as referenced in BP5141, AP5141).  Please consult with the SAS department.

San José City College (SJCC) will waive AA/AS/ADT general education and graduation requirements if:

  • A student submits an official transcript showing completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college/university and;
  • A student has successfully completed the major requirements as set forth in the new major or concentration and;
  • At least 12 semester units have been completed in residence at SJCC.
