Journalism - Associate in Arts for Transfer
The Associate in Arts in Journalism for Transfer (AA-T) degree meets the lower division course requirements necessary for the California State University (CSU) system. The Journalism program includes courses focused on the subject matter knowledge and competence needed to initiate study of Journalism, Mass Communication, Business, Advertising and Marketing, Sociology, Political Science, Visual Media, and English. Students majoring in Journalism develop critical thinking, problem solving, written, visual, and verbal communication skills, as well as an understanding of legal and ethical issues as they relate to the media.
As Journalism majors, students have opportunities to explore careers in many areas such as digital media, social media, public relations, public information/affairs, photojournalism, book publications, marketing, advertising, communications, technical writing, copywriting, graphic design, newspapers, magazines, radio, and television.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Describe the roles of the various mass media, including their operation and current issues.
- Practice news gathering strategies through interviews with live sources, database searches, review of other printed materials and exploration of Internet web sites
- Recognize the legal and ethical issues and responsibilities of the mass media
- Practice time and resource management
