Degrees and Certificates

San José City College is authorized by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges to confer the Associate in Arts for Transfer degree, Associate in Science for Transfer degree, Associate in Arts degree, Associate in Science Degree, and Certificates of Achievement upon students who complete the necessary requirements.

Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs: AA-T and AS-T)

These degrees are conferred upon students who intend to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a California State University (CSU) campus. Students complete a minimum of 60 CSU transferable semester units and earn at least a grade point average of 2.0.

Associate in Arts Degree

The Associate in Arts (AA) degree is conferred upon students who complete the minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units, earn at least a grade point average of 2.0, and meet the degree's graduation requirements.

Associate in Science Degree

The Associate in Science (AS) degree is conferred upon students who complete the minimum of 60 degree applicable semester units, earn at least a grade point average of 2.0, and meet the degree's graduation requirements.

Certificates of Achievement

Certificates of Achievement prepare students for direct job entry. Many certificate programs can be completed in one year, while others are designed to be completed over a longer period of time. Courses must be completed with a "C" grade or better.

Certificates of Specialization

Certificates of Specialization are not approved by the State. A certificate will be issued by the department offering the program. All courses within the Certificate of Specialization must be completed with a "C" grade or better. Only courses will be posted on the student’s transcripts. Certificates of Specialization will not be posted to transcripts.

Certificate of Competency

Certificates of Competency are not approved by the State. The department offering the program will issue a Certificate of Competency which will not be posted on to transcripts.

Certificate of Completion

Certificates of Completion are not approved by the State. The department offering the program will issue a Certificate of Completion which will not be posted on to transcripts.
