About the Program
The Associate in Arts in Theatre Arts for Transfer (AA-T) meets the lower division course requirements necessary for the California State University (CSU) system. Theatre students gain self-confidence and work in a collaborative environment through class projects and performances. Theatre encourages students to take risks, to focus on their intentions and the tremendous power of personal commitment to a project or play. The core values of our Theatre Arts program are personal integrity, social justice, and examining how art imitates life.
THEAT 002 Beginning Acting 3 Units
Students will apply basic acting theory and techniques to in-class performances. They will develop skills of interpretation of drama using script analysis and characterization. Special attention is paid to skills for performance: memorization, stage movement, vocal production, and improvisation. (C-ID THTR 151)

THEAT 003 Intermediate Acting 3 Units
Students will apply intermediate acting techniques to character study and scene work. Students will expand their understanding of the acting process through in-class performances, monologues, and scenes. (C-ID THTR 152)

THEAT 015 Theatre History 1 3 Units
Students examine the history of theatre from its origins through the 17th Century. The history and development of theatre and dramatic literature are studied in relationship to cultural, political, and social conditions. Plays are read for analysis of structure, plot, character, and historical relevance. Students may be required to attend a live theatre performance. (C-ID THTR 113)

THEAT 020 Introduction to Theatre 3 Units
Students are introduced to elements of theatre production including playwriting, acting, directing, design, and criticism. Students explore periods, styles, and genres of theatre through play reading, discussion, film viewing, and by attending and evaluating live theatre productions. The course focuses on the relationship of theatre to various cultures and historical periods, and on the contributions of significant theatre artists and companies. (C-ID THTR 111)

THEAT 030 Theatre Rehearsal and Performance 1-3 Units
Students participate as actors during rehearsals and performances of a theatrical production. They will analyze the script, build a physical and psychological characterization, practice vocal and movement techniques for performance, and work as a member of a creative ensemble. (C-ID THTR 191)

THEAT 033 Technical Theatre in Production 1-3 Units
Students gain practical experience in technical theatre production in one or more of the following activities: building and maintaining sets, properties, and costumes; rigging, focusing and running lights; setting up and using sound equipment; stage and house management. (C-ID THTR 192)

THEAT 040 Introduction to Film 3 Units
Students will be introduced to film and television media through viewing and analysis of cinema and video productions from a variety of cultures. The work of filmmakers is examined including screenwriting, cinematography, editing, visual and sound design, acting, and directing.

THEAT 050 Introduction to Theatre Design 3 Units
Students are introduced to basic principles of theatrical design and receive practical experience for use in all formal theatrical applications including scenery, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, properties, theatrical equipment and construction techniques. (C-ID THTR 172)

THEAT 051 Costume Design 3 Units
Students will learn stage costume design and construction. They will create and construct costumes appropriate to a wide range of stage productions. This course covers costume history and research, design principles, costuming materials and equipment, and basic construction techniques. Students may be required to attend a play. (C-ID THTR 174)

THEAT 052 Stage Makeup 3 Units
Students will be introduced to the basic techniques of designing and applying stage makeup. Makeup techniques covered in this course will include: contouring the face with highlights and shadows, applying bases, eye makeup, special effects makeup, hair and wig dressing. Makeup and hair design for modern and period plays will be surveyed. Students may be required to attend a play. (C-ID THTR 175)

THEAT 055 Chicanx/Latinx Theatre 3 Units
Students will examine the history and practice of Chicanx/Latinx Theatre. Emphasis will be placed on the development of Chicanx/Latinx theatre in the United States. Specific areas of interest will include major works and playwrights in the Chicanx/Latinx theatre movement.
