Cosmetology - Associate in Science
The Cosmetology Associate in Science (AS) Degree includes both major coursework in Cosmetology and the required general education pattern. In contrast, the Certificate of Achievement - Level 3 consists only of the major courses in Cosmetology without any GE requirements. The AS Degree provides students interested in becoming a licensed cosmetologist with instruction in technical and theoretical knowledge relating to the basic skills in all phases of cosmetology, including current salon techniques and trends. Emphasis is placed on application of skills in hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, hairstyling, hair cutting, manicuring, skin care, facials and makeup. Instruction in professionalism, salon management, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, sanitation, the Cosmetology Act, rules and regulations are included.
The Cosmetology Program requires Cosmetology coursework that consists of 1200 hours of instruction, to satisfy the requirements of the California State Board of Cosmetology. Once a student is admitted to the Cosmetology Program, the student must enroll on a full-time basis (34 hours a week). Upon completion of the certificate program, students are eligible to take the State Board Examination for licensing. This program is intended to prepare students for Cosmetology entry positions such as hairstylist, facialist, and manicurist.
Students interested in the Cosmetology Program must complete and submit the program’s supplemental application, which is separate from the general SJCC admission application. To apply, visit the SJCC Cosmetology web page to view the application and view the eligibility criteria.
A grade of "C" or better is required for each course in the major or area of emphasis. A "P" (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major or area of emphasis if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Interpret manufacturers’ directions to accurately and safely perform hair, skin, and nail services for clients.
- Demonstrate written competencies required to qualify for the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing exam.
- Apply state‐mandated safety, sanitation, and client protection standards in all salon services and procedures.
- Analyze and formulate appropriate solutions for hair color, chemical texturizing, skin care, and nail care by using professional judgment and technical knowledge.
