PHOTO 009 History of Photography 3 Units
Students will engage in critical evaluation and comparative analysis of photographic trends, themes, and purposes, allowing them to discern the cultural influences and expressions embedded in various photographic works. The course encourages an exploration of how photography has served as a mirror to societal values, beliefs, and perspectives across different cultures and communities. Through the diverse facets of photographic history, students gain a nuanced understanding of how this visual medium has been utilized to reflect, challenge, and contribute to the cultural tapestry.

PHOTO 022 Beginning Darkroom Photography 3 Units
Students will be introduced to camera use and darkroom technique. The fundamentals of design and composition are explored, and students will examine the relationship between photography and other art forms. They will explore photography as a social documentary tool, an art form, and as a vocational skill. Black and white film and darkroom techniques are given priority but digital photography will also be introduced. Students must provide their own 35mm camera. Field trips to museums and galleries may be required.

PHOTO 062 Intermediate Darkroom Photography 3 Units
Students will learn the intermediate practice and theory of photography. Topics include black-and-white photography skills, color theory and vision, on-camera flash, studio lighting, digital imaging, and the history of photography. Students will examine issues within photography, ways to conceptualize the finished image, and how photography is used in print and electronic media. Students must provide their own 35mm camera. Field trips to museums and galleries may be required.

PHOTO 076 Digital Photo Editing 3 Units
Students will learn how to enhance and manipulate images using industry-standard software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. The curriculum covers essential topics including color correction, retouching, compositing, and creative image editing. Students will work on practical projects, developing their skills in image enhancement, and honing their ability to bring out the best in their photographs. Participants will have a solid foundation in digital photo editing, enabling them to produce professional-quality images for various applications, from photography to graphic design and marketing.

PHOTO 077 Photoshop 2 3 Units
Students will explore Photoshop at an advanced level to complete complex and creative digital images. Students will continue to build skills in color correction, channels, masks, effects, and filters. This course is intended for students of photography, art, journalism, web or print design, animation or video - and all who are interested in expanding their basic Photoshop skills.

PHOTO 079 Beginning Digital Photography 3 Units
Students will learn to use DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras professionally using both manual and advanced program modes, working with light, lens, shutter, exposure, depth, motion, and color balance. Students will study post-production principles such as manipulating tonal range, correcting color, dodging and burning, adjustment layers and masking, output for print and other devices. Software used are Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, and iPhoto. Class activities require weekly shooting assignments, thorough organization, advanced image editing, and on-going print preparation (including wide format). This is a beginner's course in Digital Photography.

PHOTO 098 Directed Study in Photography 0.5-9 Units
Individual or small groups of students, with previous course work in the discipline, who would benefit from Independent Study under the direction of faculty members in specific or related disciplines, may develop individualized learning contracts designed to enhance their individual instructional programs. The students and the faculty member in consultation with the Division Dean will determine appropriate learning objectives and activities as well as the number of units to be earned. Instructions and the Learning Contract forms are available in the Division Office. Repeatable to a maximum of 9 units across all disciplines.
