History - Associate in Arts for Transfer
The Associate in Arts degree for Transfer (AA-T) in History meets the lower division course requirements necessary for the California State University (CSU) system. History is studied in order to fully understand the complexities of this modern globalized world. In the 21st century, history is moving rapidly as an integrative, multidisciplinary science. To truly know a person, it is necessary to know his or her story. This is also true about nations. History goes far beyond the simple memorization of dates and events. In pursuing the AA-T in History, students acquire skills in research, information gathering, and analytic thinking. Students will develop critical thinking skills, utilize primary and secondary sources and texts in their writing, and increase cultural awareness. These skills are the foundation of many professions. The study of history can lead to professional fields such as law, business, government, foreign service, journalism, non-profit organizations and teaching.
To be awarded the Associate in Arts in History for Transfer degree, students must:
(1) Complete 60 semester units or 90 quarter units which are eligible for transfer to the California State University (CSU) system, including both of the following:
(A) The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) Requirements.
(B) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
(2) Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
While a minimum of 2.0 is required for admission, some majors may require a higher GPA. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) also require that students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A "P" (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a “pass/no pass” basis.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Recognize connections between the past and the present; i.e., locate both self and others in time and space.
- Evaluate historical sources with their strengths and limitations.
- Interpret multiple forms of historical evidence including written, visual, oral, statistical, and artifacts.
