Journalism

About the Program

The Journalism Program provides students with training and hands-on experience in the area of media communications. The program promotes an understanding of the impact of media on society and the individual, as well as prepares students for careers in a variety of journalism fields. In the mass media class, students learn about legacy and new media and how to become more media literate in a digital culture. In the news writing and reporting course as well as the media production courses, students learn the fundamentals of journalism and how to gather information, write and report stories for print, electronic and social media. In broadcasting, students learn the basics of on-air broadcasting, engineering and managing at a radio station. In the broadcasting and student newspaper courses, students learn through active engagement in the production and publication of The SJCC Times and broadcasts aired on the College’s Internet and FM radio station, KJCC.

The Associate in Arts in Journalism for Transfer (AA-T) degree meets the lower division course requirements necessary for the California State University (CSU) system.  The Journalism program includes courses focused on the subject matter knowledge and competence needed to initiate study of Journalism, Mass Communication, Business, Advertising and Marketing, sociology, political science, visual media, and English.  Students majoring in Journalism develop critical thinking, problem solving, written, visual, and verbal communication skills, as well as an understanding of legal and ethical issues as they relate to the media.
