About the Program
San José City College offers an Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts with three different possible areas of emphasis: Arts and Humanities, Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning, or Social and Behavioral Sciences. In addition, the college offers two Certificates of Achievements: CSU GE-Breadth and IGETC. A grade of “C” or better is required in all coursework for the major or area of emphasis. A "P" (Pass) grade is an acceptable grade for courses in the major or area of emphasis if the course is taken on a "pass/no pass" basis.
Art and Humanities courses emphasize the study of cultural, literary, humanistic activities and artistic expression of human beings. Students will evaluate and interpret the ways in which people through the ages in different cultures have responded to themselves and the world around them in artistic and cultural creation. Students will also learn to value aesthetic understanding and incorporate these concepts when constructing value judgments.
The Certificate of Achievement in CSU GE-Breadth is a program that provides students with the option of fulfilling all lower division general education requirements before transferring to the California State University (CSU) system. The Certificate of Achievement in Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a program that provides students with the option of fulfilling all lower division general education requirements for transferring to the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems.
